Douglas DC-6

The Real Aircraft

The Douglas DC-6 was a piston-powered airliner and transport aircraft that represented the pinnacle of propeller-driven commercial aviation. It was faster, had a longer range, and could carry more passengers than almost any contemporary aircraft.

Key Specifications:

  • Manufacturer: Douglas Aircraft Company
  • First Flight: February 15, 1946
  • Introduction: March 1947 (United Air Lines)
  • Type: Four-engine propliner
  • Engines: 4× Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp (2,400 hp each)
  • Cruise Speed: 507 km/h (315 mph)
  • Range: 4,835 km (3,005 miles)
  • Passengers: 48-102

Over 700 DC-6s were built, serving worldwide until jets took over. Even today, a few DC-6s remain in cargo service in Alaska and elsewhere. The aircraft defined a golden age of air travel when crossing the Atlantic was an event.

The Simulation

The PMDG DC-6 was PMDG’s first product for Microsoft Flight Simulator and set a new standard for radial engine simulation.

Features:

  • Complete Radial Engine Management: Mixture, prop, throttle, cowl flaps—all the complexity of real piston operations
  • Authentic Systems: Hydraulics, pressurization, electrical—all modeled in depth
  • Period Navigation: Use pre-jet era navigation techniques
  • Full Crew Operations: Flight engineer station fully functional
  • Comprehensive Documentation: Real DC-6 pilot manuals included
  • Compatible with MSFS 2020/2024
